a felt dove ornament

I mentioned it last week, but I realized some of you may have missed it: everyday this week I will have instructions for a new handmade ornament.  You probably caught on by now, seeing it’s wednesday and look! another tutorial.  This is my christmas gift to you–all my readers! I’ve said it before, but I mean it: you are awesome. And you deserve a present, or five.
This little bird takes four strips of felt and five stitches to make. Really, that’s it.

Laced Trinket Trays

Things to make and do - Laced Trinket Trays

We made the laced trinket trays below using card and paper sent to us by the excellent Ideas in Paper ; if you want top quality paper and card for your craft projects, that's the place to get it! And if you mention Things to Make and Do when you order, you'll get a 10% discount!

These are really stylish trays and can have many uses, from holding bits and bobs, ribbons, hair bobbles, string, paperclips and elastic bands to adding a strip of card as a handle and filling with some crumpled up tissue paper and some chocolate eggs and you have an Easter basket. You can keep them yourself or give them as a present, once you’ve made one you’ll be hooked and want to make more. The template provided below makes a tray 6cm across the base, and about 7cm high.

Paper Party Decorations _ Easy Peasy Garland, Perfect For The Succah!

Succot Party Bunting Banner Paper Circles
Isn't this sweet? If all you do is make many long ropes of these and string them across the walls and ceiling of your Succah, you can have a totally modern and gorgeous Succah, even breathtaking!  Really! Though if you want to go for breathtaking you'll need quantity and no other decorations what so ever. Got it? Sort of like a modern 50's/60's art installation if you happen to know what I mean. And if you've got kids 6 or 7 or older, they can easily do a great job turning out a bunch of these!
You'll Need:
  • colored paper, preferably card stock, though used laser paper
  • a glue stick
  • fishing line
  • a 3" circle punch
  • a 2" scalloped circle punch
  • or alternatively, a bunch of colored round stickers in a few sizes, even easier!

Summer Kid Crafts: Grow a Head

Grow a Head

Here's a summer craft I saw best explained in pictures. I saw a local toy store selling them in kits (and on Amazon as well) but it's so much cheaper to make one on your own.

Grow a Head
First you take an old nylon and cut it off at the ankle. Sprinkle some grass seed in the toe and spoon in some dirt from the garden.

Another Pencil Holder

I love looking in catalogs to get ideas for decorating or crafting. I love the Pottery Barn catalog, and in the newest one we received had this cool pencil holder in it.

Pom pom maker

pompomtut1
This is a tutorial for making pom-poms using your
fingers. This one is a small, two-finger pom-pom
(about 1" in diameter) but you can make bigger ones
by using more fingers. As far as yarn choice, thinner
and softer yarn will make a more pleasing pom-pom.

flower peeps!

Thanks for all of your healing thoughts yesterday. I'm truly fine and so is my finger. Having a day to just play and not even go near sharp tools was all I needed to get grounded. In fact, the play yesterday was extraordinary. A good reminder for the rest of the summer... let go of expectations and enjoy spontaneity with my children. I think my summer mantra should be "let go... and play". I used to be all about that, but having a shop has definitely put a little more pressure on me to work. So, as I'm a firm believer in "a reason for everything"... my little accident, and the dynamic day that followed, was a clear message to keep PLAY the priority for my favorite season. Yesterday began with a perfect weather and an unscheduled morning. It was a yes kind of morning...
